20 Nov Grateful
I’ve had an off-week when it comes to writing. My usual writing hours have been swallowed up by other good things and I was away from my computer Friday through the weekend . . . hence the lack of posts. But I wanted to share this photo because it captures the joy that came crashing unannounced into my soul this afternoon. It was one of those ordinary moments. Camilla was doing homework. Adrian was painting. I was making dinner. Christmas music was playing. I know I’m three days early with the music, but I couldn’t resist. And now I’m glad I didn’t, because of the joy. It crept up behind me and exploded in my heart just about the moment Camilla leaned over and said, “Good job, Adrian!”
I’ve been reading One Thousand Gifts and I think Ann Voskamp may be on to something. Noticing, thanking God for the little things, for every little gift . . . well, I don’t think joy would have exploded in my heart tonight if I’d been hung up on “Why me?” If you’re still in that place, I understand. My purpose is not to judge you for questioning God. I can’t say I’ve stopped altogether. I still ache deeply. But my little offerings of gratitude over the past week have opened my soul to joy again.
