Five Minute Friday: Roots

Five Minute Friday: Roots

It’s Friday again! This week has flown by. I know you are all waiting with bated breath for the next installment of my Allume story. Don’t worry. That will come soon. Honestly, I didn’t expect it to take this long, but there is so much to process and my week has been crazy. So wait a little longer, dear ones. It will be worth it.

While you wait, you can read today’s Five Minute Friday post. I’m joining Lisa Jo Baker (AKA Gypsy Mama) again to write for five minutes on her weekly prompt. No editing or rewriting allowed. Click on this link if you want to try it, too. You know what? Click on that link regardless, because today Lisa Jo posted a photo from last week’s live Five Minute Friday party at Allume. And I am in that photo! The big photo with about a thousand people. I’m in the second row, kind of in the middle, and my head is a little lower than everyone else in that row, not because I’m short but because I turned sideways and splayed out my arms and did this dippie thing. Hey, we were supposed to get all crazy!

Okay, come back to me now. I broke the rule this week and made a couple changes after the five minutes. Sorry–I’m a little rusty. The prompt this week is “Roots”.

GO
Please don’t notice. They are a darker shade of brown. With a few grays sparsely populating my brunette locks. Those hoary residents, evidence of the wealth of wisdom I’ve gained, are the whole reason I turned to color in the first place. So why did I turn away again?
Well, it’s not set in stone. I’m just trying to decide what to do. When it was time to color again, I had learned I was pregnant and I just don’t color when I’m pregnant. Now I could do it again. But I already have a few inches of roots and I keep telling myself it doesn’t look that bad. Maybe I will grow it out. But the grays are too many to pluck. Ouch. And they mock me. “You think you’re still young enough to have another baby? You have gray hair!”
Still, every time I do it, that odor, the excess chemicals running down the drain . . . tell me it isn’t natural. And so I watch the roots grow. Watch them increase. And wonder what to do . . .
STOP
I know this isn’t what Lisa Jo had in mind when she came up with the prompt, but I was feeling creative and the need for a little levity after my previous post. Have a great weekend!

I bet Lisa-Jo will love this direction, even if it's not what came to her mind at the whisper of "roots."

As for your hair color, I'm told that reverse hair coloring (darker on top and lighter on the bottom) is all the rage these days. So maybe your roots are actually a fancy new hairdo?

I don't really know. 🙂 But I love how you've shared some of your struggle with us here! Thank you!

I love your take on the prompt! I've not gotten to the point of grays yet (though my hubby who is the same age as me has.) But I tell myself that I will go gray with pride. I hope I still feel that way when it happens!

I have one stubborn gray hair that continually grows back and I know there would be more but I dye my hair all the time because I get bored easily. Sometimes levity is very much needed. Thanks for sharing your five minutes and hair tips from someone who just doesn't know what to do. 🙂 Also, it was nice to meet you even if it was brief. I was the one by the coffee that commented on your blog title because my tagline is similar. I haven't had time yet to read all the linked up posts about Allume but I'm looking forward to seeing what God was doing in each woman's journey.

I alluded to this kind of roots in my post, too! I've always wanted to go with the grays as they showed up, but I envisioned grays showing up on my Honey's head right around the same time. He stubbornly refuses to grow any gray hairs except in his beard even though I find gray hair so attractive on men and I have asked him to get on with graying already! 😉 So when they show up on my head first… what do I do? The decision will have to be made soon.

Thanks for a fun post today. I'll be back!

I dyed my hair once black. My husband keeps wanting me to do it again but I just can't make myself. I want to enjoy my color before it all turns gray. I have a nice gray streak but it's mainly covered up by another layer. Fun post!

That's funny. I, too, highlighted for a very short time before I had kids. Then I stopped when I was pregnant with my first son and haven't colored since. I agree it just seems unnatural, and I don't like paying the extra money for the color! But I also think I might be tempted once those gray hairs keep coming and coming. Best luck with that hair! 🙂

As I type, silver strands of "wisdom" are peaking out from my part:)) Honestly, I haven't learned to "embrace" them, but I have accepted they are there. Love your take on "roots" for FMF.

Yes, it's sad that Stefanie longs to be a "silver sister", but just can't seem to pull on her big girl boots and just go for it. 😉 I have an issue with the cost and I am cheap. Thing is, I've lived for the past 12 years in very high cost hair care areas. I no longer gave roots. I'm full on tinsel that sparkles. You might be able to see them. I'm wearing the yellow glasses with Lisa-Jo in the smile booth pic.
Sorry to leave another 5 minutes, but I loved thus and all the comments. Sorry we didn't connect at Allume.

I'm cheap, too! That's why I buy the cheap stuff and do it at home. 🙂 I looked at the pic and I don't see any tinsel. Don't apologize for leaving another five minutes. I enjoyed it.
